i thank you god for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees,
and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural,
which is infinite, which is yes.

first day.

it was the first day of school yesterday for my first & second graders. the morning went very smoothly & they both came home with smiles on their faces...so i think all in all it was a success. i did get a lot accomplished yesterday & that felt good too! i'm embracing the routine again, kinda missed that.

'damn herringbone'

i am soooo lucky to have one of those dads who can do ANYTHING. i found plans for this cool daybed which i thought would be perfect for a bedroom up north and got him on board to help make it. it went pretty smooth although there were a few bumps in the construction...like attaching the back on backwards and having to remove the nails to get it on the right way. he also was fighting me on doing what he called the 'damn herringbone' pattern. 'it's going to be a lot of work & will just collect dust' he told me over & over. i stood my ground and told him the pattern is why i liked the bed so much & we had to do it. it definitely was a lot of cutting & confusing at times but we made it through! i think it turned out super cute & we decided to make another one for the room plus make matching headboards for the other two beds that are up there. i'm thankful that my dad & i work so well together & i am always amazed with what he can do. he can be a bit whiny at times (ha!) but i can deal with it. it was a project i won't forget...
love you dad!!

epic.

this is the last weekend of summer break before school officially starts. i came across this picture yesterday while on my computer & i couldn't help but smile huge. the boys didn't want to go on this ride...they thought it was way too baby-ish. i love everything about this photo-the bright colors, the messy hair & the genuine expressions. these guys are getting so big & i hate that time is flying by so fast. we had such a great summer & made tons of 'epic' memories.
we were supposed to spend this last weekend up north but poor ay has strep so the trip is cancelled. wahhhhh.
just hoping he feels better fast....

looking into his eyes

ay agreed last night to let me take some pics of him in town. it was nice to have the one on one time with him. when he was younger he would willingly do these impromptu shoots so i could practice & would always give me the best expressions. now that he is getting bigger...he really can't be bothered & i guess i can't blame him! when we received the pictures of baby ay in korea before he traveled to us, the first thing i noticed were his big brown eyes. they drew me in & i instantly fell in love. when i sit at the computer and edit pictures of him like these, i still see those same big sweet eyes on this much older handsome boy. some days my patience is tested to the maximum with him but my love is so strong for this little man.
Ay-i hope you know that in every way, & all the corners of my soul, i love you.

feelin' wings though i've never flown

sometimes music lyrics can be dead on with the way i'm feeling. i am always listening to music and there are certain songs i will play frequently and this is definitely one of them. joss stones voice is one of the most soothing i've ever heard. i feel like this is the 'anthem' to my life...

I've got a right to be wrongMy mistakes will make me strongI'm steppin' out into the great unknownI'm feelin' wings though I've never flown

Got a mind of my ownI'm flesh and blood to the boneI'm not made of stoneGot a right to be wrongSo just leave me alone

Got the right to be wrongI've been held down too longI've got to break freeSo I can finally breatheGot a right to be wrongGot to sing my own songI might be singin' out of keyBut it sure feels good to meGot a right to be wrongSo just leave me alone

You're entitled to your opinionBut it's really my decisionI can't turn back I'm on a missionIf you care don't you dare blur my visionLet me be all that I can beDon't smother me with negativityWhatever's out there waitin' for meI'm gonna face it willingly, woo ooo

I've got a right to be wrongMy mistakes will make me strong, hmm mmmI'm steppin' out into the great unknownI'm feelin' wings though I've never flown

I've got a mind of my ownI'm flesh and blood to the boneSee, I'm not made of stoneI've got a right to be wrongWoo so just leave me alone

Got a right to be wrongI've been held down to longI've got to break freeSo I can finally breatheGot a right to be wrongGot to sing my own songI might be singin' out of keyBut it sure feels good to meGot a right to be wrong, ahhSo just leave me, alone hmm mmm

rockin' it

we went to the point betsie lighthouse beach near sunset one of the nights we were up north. the boys love searching through all the rocks in hopes of finding the coolest one. the light was just gorgeous & standing back with my camera and watching ry & ay enjoying something so simple was just awesome.

ghetto carnival & the boy with his eyes closed

we took the boys to the carnival up in frankfort while we were visiting. i don't know about you, but carnivals give me the creeps. we went around dinner time so the place was a ghost town and the boys had most of the rides to themselves. when going through some of the pictures i took i came across these of ryan riding the swing ride. every picture his eyes are closed. i asked him what was up with that and he told me he was "sleeping". anyways these photos crack me up....

and this last one is just hysterical....

today was the boy's last day of school & officially summer is here! they only had a half day, so i picked them up and we headed to a & w and got lunch. we spent the rest of the afternoon swimming at my parents and the weather was awesomely perfect. can't believe i have a first and second grader now-oh my. time is just flying by...

i wanted to test out some new equipment/locations so i got the boys dressed quickly and dragged them out for some practice. we had a lot of fun fooling around and i got photos of them that i absolutely adore. ay wanted to bring his skateboard which i'm so glad he did because those were my favorites of him that day. he looks so darn old in the pics though! i also brought along a guitar that was my dad's when he was a kid. i had been wanting to photograph the guitar for a while.

of course it took candy bribery to get them out there, so after we were done we headed to the store in search of pop rocks & nerds ropes. when we got to the counter the young cashier smiled and started in-

(looking at the boys) "you boys are so cute" (them oblivious)
me: thank you.
"are you their mom?"
me: yep
"are they adopted?"
me: yes
"where are they adopted from?"
me: korea

i guess this happens so infrequently that when it does happen it makes me think hard. the boys know and understand (to what degree not quite sure) that they are adopted. we have gone over photos and videos and have talked about it regularly. they are getting older now & when this situation comes up it's so awkward for some reason. i guess it irks me when someone asks these kind of questions (especially the mom part) and the boys are standing right there and understand. i am not a super sensitive person & have no problem answering questions but i guess there is a time and a place for it. i glanced over to look at them as soon as she said 'adopted' and i watched them just staring at her-no emotion. after we walked out i wondered if they would say anything to me about what she said and why she said it. as we made it back to the car all they were worried about was who was going to to get more pop rocks, nothing mentioned of our run in with the cashier.

i know down the line there will be tough questions and even tougher discussions. hopefully i will do a decent enough job to help them to understand the amazing way we were brought together.

damn i'm a lucky mom

the weather here in the mitten has been unbelievable. i still can't get over the kids wearing shorts in march...so awesome. to be able to get outside and play in this gorgeous weather has been a blessing and we took full advantage of it. i'm making a huge effort to take normal everyday photos of the kids. i find myself only wanting to bring my camera out if i want to capture something special but i realize that these 'everyday' moments can be the most special of all. although these photos are far from technically correct i love everything about them. capturing these huge smiles on my boys faces makes me so very happy.
